As part of Cambridge’s ongoing commitment to honouring the contributions and sacrifices of the United Indian Army during the First and Second World Wars, it is proposed to establish a memorial water fountain at Ditchburn Place, Mill Road, near the Cambridge Gateway from India. This memorial will honour the 1.5 million soldiers who served in WWI and the 2.5 million soldiers who served in WWII—forming the largest all-volunteer force in history. Their sacrifices laid the foundation for global peace and multicultural connections, a legacy that continues to inspire today.
The memorial will recognize the diverse nations that constituted the British Indian Army during that era: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma. The United Indian Army’s role was instrumental not only in securing victory but also in laying the foundation for global peace and cooperation—a legacy that continues to inspire today. The sacrifices made by these soldiers resonate far beyond the battlefield. Their courage and dedication transcend borders, laying the foundation for stronger multicultural connections that continue to enrich communities in both the United Kingdom and across the world today. This memorial will not only honour those who fell but also serve as a beacon of shared history, resilience, and hope for future generations..
In alignment with Cambridge’s sustainability goals, the memorial will incorporate a solar-powered water pump. This feature ensures environmental sensitivity and supports renewable energy initiatives:
